Propecia, manufactured by Merck & Co., is the only prescription medication in the form of a pill approved by the FDA to treat male pattern hair loss (Androgenic Alopecia).

Propecia (Finasteride 1mg) works by blocking the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the hormone that attacks and destroys hair follicles. By preventing the conversion of testosterone to DHT, Propecia has proven to stop hair loss and, in some instances re-grows hair in the crown.

Based on clinical trials conducted by Merck & Co. during a 24-month period, 83% of men ages 18 to 41 with mild to moderate hair loss maintained their current hair count. The study also revealed 66% of men grew new hair in the crown. Although these conclusions were reach based on a 24-month study, Propecia can show measurable results in slowing hair loss within three months.

• It is important to note that consistent daily use is necessary. If one discontinues taking the medication, all new hair generated as a result of taking the medication will be lost and hair loss will resume.

• Side effects of this drug are uncommon and do not affect most men.

• Women of childbearing age are not prescribed Propecia and instructed not to handle the pills due to the risk of birth defects in male children. The pills have coating to prevent contact with the active ingredient during normal handling, so the greatest risk is if the pills are crushed or broken.

• Propecia is available only by obtaining a prescription from a licensed physician.

Propecia costs $60-$70 a month, or less than $2 per day.

Introduced in 1988, Rogaine (Minoxidil) was the first drug approved by the FDA to treat hair loss. Rogaine is a liquid that must be applied to the balding or thinning area twice a day in order to be effective. Currently, Rogaine is available over-the-counter for men and women in 2% strength; a 5% solution called Rogaine Extra Strength is also available over the counter for men only. Rogaine products go to the root of the hair follicle and revitalize miniaturized hair follicles to re-grow new hair. With continued use of Rogaine, hair follicles' growth phases become longer, and they produce longer, thicker hairs (www.Rogaine.com). Rogaine has been clinically proven to work and has a 64% success rate stopping hair loss and re-growing hair. Like Propecia, it is important to remember that consistent daily use is necessary. If one discontinues using Rogaine, all new hair generated as a result of using the medication will be lost and hair loss will resume. Rogaine For Men Extra Strength for Men costs approximately $20 - $30 per month, or less than a dollar per day.
